Career Trajectory
Bio
C. Christopher Klepper completed his Ph.D. from The University of Texas at Austin, in 1985, as part of the research team of the Texas Experimental Tokamak, a US Department of Energy (DOE) Magnetic Fusion Energy (MFE) user facility. His dissertation was on hydrogen fuel recycling from plasma-facing solid surfaces. From 1985 to 1997, he was a member of the research staff at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in East Tennesee, where he pursued his interests in both MFE- and materials-processing-related plasmas. MFE work included extensive assignments at Cadarache, France (in connection with the French superconducting tokamak Tore Supra) and San Diego (in connection with the DIII-D Advanced Divertor Project). As a private sector researcher in southwest Virginia, from 1997 through mid-2009, he served as Principal Investigator (PI) in several federally funded projects, most involving partnerships with DOE laboratories and/or industry. These led to the development of new materials processing technologies, including super-hard boron-based metallurgical coatings through cathodic arc deposition, microwave sintering for boron and boron-rich ceramics, as well as manufacturing processes for advanced neutron-detectors and the ion-implantation of semiconductor materials. Rejoining ORNL in 2009, Dr. Klepper has most recently focused on resolving critical issues in plasma-wall interaction near high power (multi-mega-watt) radio-frequency wave launchers, through innovating measurement at international fusion energy facilities, including Tore Supra/WEST in France and JET in the UK. Since 2010, he has served as PI for a US-led project to develop and manufacture diagnostic residual gas analyzers (DRGA) for real-time monitoring of fuel-cycle effluents in ITER, the international MFE facility under construction at Cadarache, France. He has been an author or coauthor of over 120 journal papers. Dr. Klepper is an active member of the APS; has been Member of the IEEE since 2003, Senior Member since 2008; is alumnus of Sigma Pi Sigma and Phi Beta Kappa.
