Bio
Dr. Christina Hazard is a group leader in the Environmental Microbial Genomics Group in the Bioengineering Department at École Centrale de Lyon, University of Lyon, France. The Hazard Lab is dedicated to exploring the diversity and distribution of soil microorganisms and viruses in natural and anthropized ecosystems, the factors influencing their communities and activities, and impact on biogeochemical cycling. Our research includes a focus on specific microbial functional groups such as mycorrhizal fungi, which form symbioses with the majority of plants, are found in most terrestrial habitats, and provide several ecosystem services. Our work delves into the ecology of nitrogen and methane cycling microbes and their viruses with the aim to mitigate N pollution and greenhouse gas emissions from the environment. We are also interested in soil viruses, which are abundant, diverse and dynamic in soils, yet we are only beginning to understand their impact on microbial communities and biogeochemical cycling. We use field surveys & experiments, and greenhouse and controlled laboratory experiments implementing multiple techniques such as omics, culturing, stable isotope and greenhouse gas analyses.
