Bio
Caterina is an Italian molecular biologist with extensive experience in the field of haemostasis. Her introduction to the field occurred during her Master’s degree studies at the University of Ferrara (Italy) in the laboratory of Prof. Francesco Bernardi. At the conclusion of her Master’s studies she stayed on under Dr. Bernardi’s mentorship and soon obtained her Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Biotechnology with a thesis focused on von Willebrand Factor (VWF), which was selected as the “Best Research Thesis in Medicine and Biology” in 2010 by the University of Ferrara.
Fascinated by the biochemical features and by the many pathophysiological roles of VWF, she moved to Paris for her first post-doctoral experience (2010-2013). She joined the team of Drs. Cécile Denis, Peter Lenting and Olivier Christophe where she strengthened her expertise on VWF and acquired experience with in vivo mouse models. While investigating several molecular pathways resulting in von Willebrand Disease type 2B, a paradoxical bleeding disorder associated with thrombocytopenia, she extended her curiosity and efforts to platelet biology and platelet-associated disorders. In 2014, she was awarded a three-year Non-clinical Junior Research Fellowship by the European Hematology Association to join the group of Prof. Wolfgang Bergmeier at the McAllister Heart Institute (University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, USA). In 2016 she returned to INSERM in Paris where she was selected as Chargé de recherche de classe normale in 2018.
Currently her research studies are predominantly focused on VWF and its partners. She is interested in developing in vitro & in vivo models to elucidate molecular mechanisms underlying the unsolved clinical aspects of congenital and acquired von Willebrand disease. She is also interested in exploring novel molecular strategies that can be applied as therapeutic approaches for VWF-associated disorders.
She is the chair of the ISTH-Early Career Committee (2020-2022).
