At this point in my career, I have acquired a broad knowledge in the field of material behaviour at composite interfaces, as well as in testing, design and processing of advanced polymer composites at different hierarchical levels with a strong motivation to serve the scientific and technological development of society in a sustainable conscious way. The different awards I have received for my research were all related to engineering the interface of either recycled or natural reinforced composites. My two granted patents are also related to green technologies.
I have extensive experience working and leading interdisciplinary research, as well as securing research funding, such as projects funded by the Vlaamse Interuniversitaire Raad (VLIR), the European Union’s Seventh Framework Programme (FP7), the Bio-based Industries Consortium (BIC), the Swiss Commission for Technology and Innovation (CTI), the Materials Innovation Institute from the Netherlands (M2i), and the Dutch Polymer Institute (DPI) which were not only interdisciplinary but also international, with the need of coordination within research groups from different countries. As a result, I have well established collaboration with prestigious research groups in Europe.
I have also conducted extensive research with industrial partners, from fundamental to applied research, such as projects funded by Ford, Akzo Nobel, Sabic, Teijin, SKF, Total, L’Oréal, Toyota, Toray, Owens Corning, and DSM; mainly dealing with optimization of composite interfaces.
My research work has been accomplished in close collaboration with master and bachelor students, as well as industrial partners. I have helped my students to achieve their full potential intellectually and to improve their research skills, working with commitment, giving constructive criticism and constant encouragement, and offering respectful support. As a consequence, several of my students co-author my publications in the highest quality journals of my field. I am committed to students and their learning.
My work related to the dissemination (last update April 2022) of my RDI projects to date consisted in the publication of 26 peer-reviewed publications in the highest impact factor journals of my field, as well as 2 patents, a book chapter, and 36 master theses. My research work has more than 1175 citations (google scholar) and my publications have been consulted by more than 28k researchers (researchgate). I have participated in 57 international conferences as oral presenter, 4 as invited speaker and 1 as plenary/keynote presenter throughout Europe, as well as U.S.A, Canada, China, South Korea, Australia and Latin America. I am topic editor of “fibers” journal and also regular journal referee of the highest impact factor journals of the field of composite science.
My research interests are on bio-inspired complex materials with potential applications as multiscale interfacial materials, adding interface multifuncionality, and smart composite materials. The unique combination of strength and ductility in natural materials, as well as their stimuli-sensitive interfaces are attributed to their sophisticated hierarchical structure. If we are keen to understand how these nano- and microstructures interact, then it will be possible to manipulate these interactions to improve bulk material and interfacial properties. This will allow us not only to create bio-inspired materials and interfaces but also to improve the mechanical and interfacial properties of standard fibre reinforced composites, as well as on different types of adhesive bonding applications. A good example is the surface of butterfly wings which exhibits directional adhesion as an effect of flexible nanotips on overlapping rigid nanostrips. Then, by controlling the surface topology and chemical composition, it is also possible to control the adhesion strength at interfaces.
