Bio
Bruno Falcão is a highly motivated and experienced Ph.D. researcher with broad expertise in the physical characterization of nanomaterials, in particular through spectroscopy techniques (e.g., Raman, Fourier- transform infrared, photoluminescence), X-ray diffraction, and electron microscopy, as well as in semiconductor/thin-film deposition and device fabrication in cleanroom environment. Throughout his research career, he has been primarily focused on the investigation of structural, optical, and electrical properties of a wide variety of nanostructured materials, ranging from group-IV quantum dots, metal nanoparticles, III-V nanowires, to Si-based, CZTS, and CIGS thin-films, and working on their integration in optoelectronic devices, namely photovoltaics.
Since 2010, his scientific activities have been mainly developed at the Institute for Nanostructures, Nanomodelling, and Nanofabrication (I3N) at Universidade de Aveiro (UA) in the scope of many (inter)national projects and active collaborations, and has spanned also to the industry (SolarPlus SA). He has had several internationalisations, either as a mobility student or a visiting researcher, including in Brazil (Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais), Sweden (NanoLund, Lund University), Denmark (iNano, Aarhus University), and Italy (Institute for Microelectronics and Microsystems of the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche, IMM/CNR). He has also been engaged in the formation of (under)graduate students as a teaching assistant, invited lecturer, and thesis supervisor. After completion of his Ph.D. in 2020 (UA), he become a full-time researcher at CICECO – Aveiro Institute of Materials, where he is currently working on the synthesis and characterization of novel carbon-based superhard materials at extreme conditions of pressure and temperature. Meanwhile, he continues to be involved in educational activities in the physics department of UA, and to collaborate with I3N and other (inter)national groups and institutions (e.g., International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory, University of Duisburg-Essen, Technical University of Munich, Qatar Environment and Energy Research Institute at the Hamad Bin Khalifa University, and Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee at the University of Roorkee) in different projects in the field of materials science and applied physics, with emphasis on the development of biological and high-performance optoelectronic applications based on Si nanocrystals.
Overall, he contributed to the publication of 23 scientific papers in top-ranked peer-reviewed journals, participated in numerous national and international scientific events, and received several distinctions and presentation awards. According to Scopus, he has over 300 citations and an h-index of 10.
