Career Trajectory
Bio
Brigite is a senior researcher at ForestWise (Collaborative Laboratory for Integrated Forest and Fire Management) - Campus UTAD to conduct forest and fire management activities with the aim of building a cohesive approach to overcoming rural fires in the face of global changes (socioeconomic, climate, market demands, abiotic and biotic risks). Previously, 6-years assistant researcher and member of the FORCHANGE research line at the Forest Research Centre (CEF), School of Agriculture (ISA), ULisboa. The degree in Forest Engineering obtained in 2002 (ESACB, Instituto Politécnico de Castelo Branco) was followed in 2008 by a master's degree in Statistics and Information Management - Geographical Information System, Demographical and Environmental - in ISEGI, ULisboa. The collaboration in several national projects allowed accomplishing a Ph.D. degree in Forestry and Natural Resources at ISA (April 30th, 2015), where the main goal was to develop tools to support the design of fire-resistant landscapes in Portugueses ecosystems. Previously, 7-years of professional experience at non-profit organizations, state agencies, as well as national consultancy in the field of fire management planning of Mediterranean species; combined with research experience from 2008 to the present. In the last 12-years, I made substantial contributions to the development of tools to support the design of fire-resistant and resilient landscapes. Specifically, in the last 5-year I conducted research initiated under the scope of the Ph.D. and the results may be summarized as i) a set of wildfire risk, damage, behavior, and fire suppression models for the main Portuguese forest cover types, providing an overview of effective management strategies to improve fire resilience and selecting priority areas of intervention, and further insights to support hazard-reduction fuel practices; ii) a set of measurable forest ecosystem services (FES) indicators, namely: a dynamic RUSLE equation - soil erosion provision, a novel national biodiversity conservation index, Recreational and Aesthetic forested landscapes - RALF-index for cultural ecosystem services supply, carbon pool estimations, sustainable wood production; and ecosystems services alternative forest management models in the face of global change (socio-economic, climate, market demands, several risks) integrated into a Decision Support system - SADfLOR. In addition, these findings were actively discussed with forest actors in several workshops, with the aim of developing sustainable management strategies and enhancing resilient landscapes. This research has benefited from the interaction with 20 national and about 40 international researchers in the framework of several scientific projects (10 National, 10 International) and further disseminated in international conferences. I am co-author of 21 WoS articles and 2 book chapters. The contribution of my research allowed me to enhance the syllabus of several courses as well as to enhance research supervision as recognized by ISA/ULisboa. I have lectured the Natural Resources Management and Forest Management and Certification courses as part of the Erasmus Mundus Master Programme-MEDfOR (2015/16), and Ordenamento e Gestão Florestal (2019/20 & 2020/21) to the 3rd year of Forest Engineering degree at ISA, and Avaliação e Gestão de combustíveis as part of the Post-graduate Course Gestão de Fogos Rurais (2020/21 UTAD). I have consultancy experience and scientific guidance in 1 PhD "Harmonisation of forest management scenarios and socio-ecological demands in Vale de Sousa" (ongoing) and 4 MSc. dissertations, as well as supervision of Ph.D. visiting fellows at CEF/ ISA, and participation as a committee member of the jury in doctorate degree and several master¿ degrees. Presently, Topic editor in the Land Journal and Guest Editor in a special issue "Disturbance Management in Forest Ecosystems" at the International Journal of environmental research & public health
