Dr W. B. Asiru has dedicated himself in pursuing research aiming at ensuring food security, poverty reduction and improved income to farmers and small-scale processors through development of novel processing techniques and equipment and machineries which reduces drudgery and improved processing that greatly affects SMEs positively and assist Nigeria economic growth.
He served as consultants to SMEs, donor agencies and contributed immensely to capacity building in agricultural value chain. At FIIRO, He won and coordinated a number of local and international research grants from donor agencies like BMGF (C:AVA I and II), WAAPP; African
He is a Registered Agricultural Engineer (COREN) and professional member of Nigeria Institution of Agricultural Engineers, Nigerian society of engineers, Nigerian Institute of Food Science and Technology, American Society of Agricultural & Biological Engineers
MAJOR TECHNOLOGICAL INNOVATIONS/INVENTIONS OR PROJECTS COMPLETED
(i) Major Technological Innovations/Inventions
My research focus is in the area of Agroprocessing with special emphasis on the Processing Machine Development. Presently, there is no serious commercial production of cashew kernels in Nigeria. The cashew nuts are exported in the raw state to other countries. Processing the nuts in this country will add value to it, create employment and eventually lead to the development of the country.
In the light of this, my innovation/invention has been in the determination of optimum conditions (Drying temperature and time) for the best quality and yield of whole cashew kernels which attract premium prices in international markets. The result would also assist the small-scale cashew nut processors increase their productivities, and with less drudgery. The result would assist in the areas of drying, peeling and packaging. (Papers 17 and 18). Some of the machines were developed based on some determined physical and mechanical properties cashew ( Papers 23 and 27).
Recent contributions are made in the area of development of Mobile Cassava Processing Innovation in collaboration with GIZ Green Innovation centres and BOSCH- The main goal is in transforming the cassava value chain and fostering the inclusion of marginalized rural women, and;
• Improve stationary processing, hygienic and sanitary conditions, business skills, diversify product lines and strengthen rural women cooperatives and Create additional employment especially among women and youths.
The components of MOCAPI includes grater, hammer mill, 1.5 KVA generator, BOSCH sealing machine all mounted on the trailer of a tricycle while the cassava press is towed by the tricycle. This is a remarkable contribution of my research work to the rural women and youth employment as the field test conducted yield positive results.
Another recent development is the innovative boiler design and development in collaboration with Automation Engineering Academy (AEA/FIIRO Project). The system is using solar panel to power the boiler without external electrical source(s).

Development of a Circular Cassava Chipping Machine. (FIIRO Research Project – 2008). g.) Development of Stainless steel pepper grinder. (FIIRO Research Project 2016). h.) Development of fruit juice carbonation. FIIRO Research Project - 2016). i.) Development of a fruit juice/tomato concentrator. (FIIRO Research Project – 2018). j.) Development of an innovative boiler using solar panel as energy source. (AEA/FIIRO Research Project- 2018). k.) Automation of kunu and zobo production lines. (AEA/FIIRO Project- 2018). Some of the projects has been patented while others patent is under processing.
