个人简介
Dr. Blessing Bassey-Archibong holds a B.Sc. degree in Genetics and Biotechnology, an M.Sc. degree in Biotechnology and a Ph.D. degree in Biology with a specialization in Genetics and Molecular Biology. Blessing’s Ph.D. research focused on unravelling the molecular genetic/epigenetic factors that contribute to the racial disparity in triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) prevalence and outcomes in women of African ancestry. In the course of her doctoral training, she identified and discovered a role for the transcription factor Kaiso in TGFβ signalling and the racial disparity associated with TNBC incidence, aggressiveness and metastases in women of African ancestry.
Her postdoctoral training was completed in the laboratory of Dr. Sheila Singh and her work centred on identifying novel molecular factors involved in the establishment of early brain metastases from primary lung, breast and skin (melanoma) cancers. During this time, Blessing identified a role for the tolerogenic (immunologic) molecule HLA-G and its novel protein partner SPAG9 in the ability of several aggressive cancers including breast cancers to metastasize to the brain.
Dr. Bassey-Archibong presently works as a Research Associate in the laboratory of Dr. Manijeh Pasdar where she performs research focused on elucidating the role of plakoglobin in normal and cancerous cells. She also supervises the thesis projects of graduate students that focus on determining the biological roles of plakoglobin in cancer cells.
Her research findings have been published in renowned international journals such as the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) and have also been disseminated at several international conferences including “The AACR Science of Cancer Health Disparities Conference”. Blessing also holds an “Outstanding Research Publication Award – Genetics and Molecular Biology” from the Department of Biology at McMaster University, Canada for her research publication efforts during her doctoral training.
Dr. Bassey-Archibong hopes to be working as an Assistant Professor in Biological Sciences in Spring 2023 where she will also undertake research in TNBC racial disparities in women of African ancestry.
