个人简介
Since my young ages I have been always fascinated by nature, naturally this interest led me to study biology. During my undergraduate study, my interest in biological science, particularly in molecular biology and genetics, increased exponentially, so obtaining an MSc degree was the next logical step for me. I did my MSc study in the Biotechnology and Bioengineering Programme at Izmir Institute of Technology (in Turkey). In my master thesis, I performed QTL mapping to identify quantitative trait loci for several agronomic and antioxidant traits in tomato. In my PhD, I wanted to combine both my microbiology and plant genetic background; therefore, my PhD research involved working with underpinning plant-microbe molecular interactions. As a PhD student in the laboratory of Prof. Dr. Pierre JGM de Wit at Wageningen University (in The Netherlands), I was working on the molecular basis of the Cladosporium fulvum-tomato interaction by using bioinformatics, transcriptomics and several molecular techniques. During my postdoctoral training, I have investigated how the maize smut fungus Ustilago maydis avoids antifungal host’s chitinase activity. The results have shown that a secreted fungalysin metalloprotease (UmFly1) from U. maydis is responsible for cleavage and inactivation of host chitinases. Moreover, UmFly1 is involved in N-terminally processing and activation of endogenous fungal chitinases that are required for proper cell separation. In parallel to my work on chitinases, I have also established conceptual and technical framework to study a second pathosystem, the interaction of Ustilago hordei with its host plant barley.
I am currently working as a principal investigator at the Center for Plant Molecular Biology (ZMBP) at the University of Tübingen.
By using well-established the Ustilago hordei-barley pathosystem, my group integrates genomics, proteomics, biochemical, molecular and cell biological expertise to investigate the following research aims: i) Molecular mechanism of host cell penetration and cell-to-cell movement: How does U. hordei modulate host cell wall integrity stress and mechano-sensing during host penetration and colonization? ii) Molecular mechanism of host resistance in the U. hordei-barley/oat pathosystem? iii) Modulation of host-microbial community during disease establishment:
