个人简介
My expertise and passion over the past 20 years is creating, building, and evaluating innovative user interface technologies and understanding user behavior. I have contributed individually in research (70+publications) and patents (45+), in strategic leadership roles, and have built/managed high-performance teams. I was fortunate to work in fantastic places like Alias, Xerox PARC, IBM Almaden, Intel Research, Lab126-Amazon, and Yahoo Labs where I am the Senior Director of Mobile Research, leading a world-class mobile team focused on new mobile apps, data analytics, user studies, and sensor applications in smart cars, smart homes, and Internet of Things.
Since 2005, I have focused on creating unique user experiences and interfaces that rely on machine learning techniques in computer vision (both object recognition and gesture), speech recognition, and general signal processing (e.g., accelerometers for physical activity applications, RFID for wearable healthcare applications, GPS/wifi for location-based services). I also investigated stereoscopic displays and 3D gesture interfaces, mobile device applications, tangible user interfaces, and ubiquitous computing. I have additionally collaborated on projects to apply statistical models of human behavior to healthcare related applications. Many of the projects I worked on have shipped as successful products for IBM, Intel, Amazon, and Yahoo.
I hold three affiliate faculty appointments at University of Washington in the Computer Science and Engineering Dept, in the Information School, and in the Design Division (School of Art). I received degrees in B. Mathematics (Computer Science, Waterloo), M.A.Sc and Ph.D. (Human Factors Engineering, Toronto).
(I also do work with STEM programs, dog rescue, dog foster parent - urgent need dogs, pet therapy - with Bentley my Italian Greyhound).
