Bio
Fundamental knowledge of consciousness and emotions in the Brain is relevant for understanding human and animal behavior and how humans interpret animal behavior. Recently an interest in neuro-economics and behavioral economics has been related to this knowledge of cognition and emotion. Human decision making at a primarily emotional level, the addictive property of money and making money has been related to societal concern on extreme salaries and bonuses in the financial wold.
The knowledge has also been applied in practical definitions of animal welfare and how to measure it. Welfare is a property of the brain and brains do evaluate their own state, it would not be much of a brain otherwise.
I am keen on evidence based definitions of welfare.
The human interpretation of animals based on their own emotions is not always beneficial for the animals. One should not only criticize husbandry practices but also the way companion animals are kept.
A societal consensus on how and why to keep animals can only be achieved if all animals are weighted along the same criteria.
