After pursuing several studies in music cognition, he started brain–computer interface research in 2000. He became the Chair for Neurotechnology with the Technische Universität Berlin in 2012. The Berlin BCI Group is known for innovative machine learning approaches in the field of BCI and the development of novel experimental paradigms. This includes the transfer of BCI technology from the lab to real-world applications
