Bengt Sandin is professor at the Department of Child Studies at the University of Linköping, Sweden. which is an interdisciplinary research institution. Sandins research has focused on children and childhood in a historical perspective, spanning the period from the Early Modern to the late Swedish Welfare State. Previous interests include issues as Early Modern Education and State building, Child Labour, 19th century Education, Street Children, Educational Media Politics, Welfare Politics and Globalisation and involve both an engagement in social and cultural history of children and the construction of childhood. In particular, the research probes issues around children as actors in historical processes and the links between politics and the everyday life of children and the construction of childhood in Swedish history. Bengt Sandin has been the scientific leader of a number of research programs. The Child Saviours., with financial support from the Swedish Research Council (HSFR) and Century of the Child; with support from the Swedish Research Council for Social Research (FAS) Welfare State, Media and Modernisation, with financial support from the Bank of Sweden Bicentennial Fund (RJ) and the State, Children and the Individual (together with Professor Gunilla Halldén), with financial support from the Swedish Research Council.(VR) finally (together with Professor L C Hydén) a programme on Negotiation and Transition of the Normal Childhood, supported by the Swedish Research Council. (VR /UVK) and three independent larger research programs on the Childrens Health and Welbeing supported by the national institute of Public Health in Sweden. He is a also participating in a research program on Childrens Rights Regimes in Sweden, France and the US, and he is writing on child rights/human rights in the late welfare state. One project together with Johanna Sköld started in 2014 on Reparative Justice and is ongoing. Another ongoing reseach project focus on the historical construction of age as a criteria for voting rights as well as how children without such rights are represented. These projects have resulted in a total of over 40 books as well as a large number of articles and reports. He has been a supervisor for 26 doctorial dissertations and am currently advisor for 1 Ph D students. As a Dean of the faculty of Arts and Sciences at the University of Linköping Bengt Sandin was deeply involved in the creation of 6 interdisciplinary research and graduate schools and instrumental in the writing of their program and in the securing of their funding. He is a Fellow at the Centre for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences (CASBS) Stanford (2006-2007). He was the president the Society for the Study of Children and Youth 2011-13.
