Career Trajectory
Bio
Benedito Jose Costa Cabral completed his undergraduate studies in Physics at the University of Brasília (1974), Master's degree in Physics at the University of Brasília (1977), and Doctorate degree (Doctorat d'État ès Sciences Physiques) at the University Henri Poincaré (Nancy I) in 1985. Currently, he is a Researcher at the BioSystems and Integrative Sciences Institute (BioISI) at the University of Lisbon and Institute of Chemistry, University of Brasília. He has expertise in the areas of Statistical Physics and Theoretical Physical Chemistry, with a focus on molecular dynamics and electronic structure of complex systems.
His work has been dedicated to the study of the electronic properties of hydrogen bonding networks and supramolecular structures relevant to photosynthetic processes. He is also involved in understanding the electronic structure and photoprotection mechanisms in melanin pigments. Currently, he is working on a project focused on the molecular mechanisms of excitation and charge transfer that control the efficiency of organic and hybrid photovoltaic cells. He is also dedicated to the study of molecular sensors, particularly photoactive molecules that harness solar thermal energy.
He has published 140 papers in specialized journals and book chapters. He has presented more than 40 conferences, including seven plenary talks, at international events. He has also been involved in various academic management activities. He served as Vice-President of the Scientific Council of the Faculty of Sciences, University of Lisbon (1994-1995), Deputy Director (for Scientific Research) of the Faculty of Sciences, University of Lisbon (2009-2011), and Coordinator (equivalent to Vice-Rector) of the Strategic Area of Science and Technology at the University of Lisbon (2011). He was a Guest Editor of a special issue of the International Journal of Quantum Chemistry (2011) and currently serves on the editorial boards of Spectrochimica Acta Part A: Molecular and Biomolecular Spectroscopy (2019-) and Molecules (2020-).
