The goal of Benedick Fraass, PhD, is clinically oriented translational research. He is developing and testing new capabilities to address clinical needs and performing clinical trials to test new strategies. Next-generation treatment machines enable new delivery techniques, improving quality, efficiency and safety with automation and integrated imaging. Adaptive and IGRT treatment will enable more precision, less irradiation of normal tissue and improved outcomes. Individualizing each patient's treatment will be enabled by studies correlating pre-therapy, during-therapy and post-therapy imaging data with pre-clinical and clinical response data. Assimilating new imaging and other biomarkers into treatment planning should further improve normal tissue sparing and tumor control. Improving patient safety and radiotherapy workflow will help remove efficiency and safety issues that limit clinical application of more sophisticated treatments.
