Bio
Beda John Mwang’onde is a Senior Lecturer in Microbiology and Parasitology at the Department of Biosciences, Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA). His research focuses on ecosystems, Population Health, and Food Security and Safety. Currently, he is conducting research on mycology, specifically Ganoderma lucidum mushrooms, using hybrid Napier grass substrates. This research is part of the project "Capacity building initiative for improved agri-food systems through JUNCAO technology in Tanzania," funded by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA): DPRTC/R/126/CONAS/12/2023. As a member of the research team, Beda is also involved in studying antimicrobial resistance through the project "Green Resources Innovations for Livelihood Improvement (GRILI)," funded by DANIDA. Additionally, he is working on enhancing the use and effectiveness of bed nets through community-driven practices, a project funded by the Sokoine University of Agriculture SUARIS2: DPRTC/R/126/PEST/2/2022. He is a mentor in the project “Molecular detection of Taenia solium porcine cysticercosis in meat juice samples from pork entering the food chain”. This project is funded by the Sokoine University of Agriculture SUARIS3.
Furthermore, Beda is actively studying the epidemiology of Taenia solium cysticercosis through the project "Connect the Unconnected" for health InfoInternet in Tanzania and Mali, which is funded by the Research Council of Norway. He is also conducting research on food safety and storage along the tomato value chain in the southern highlands of Tanzania. This research is carried out in partnership with the Partnership for Enhanced Engagement Research (PEER), a project funded by USAID.
Beda has extensive experience in supervising MSc and PhD students, currently mentoring 4 MSc and 2 PhD students. He has held various coordination and leadership roles, including Coordinator of Postgraduate Students at the University of Dar es Salaam from 2012 to 2014. He served as the Coordinator for the College of Natural and Applied Sciences (CoNAS) Research, Publication, and Consultancy Committee from 2017 to 2020. He has also held positions such as Secretary General for The Sokoine University of Agriculture Academic Staff Association (SUASA) and Deputy Acting Principal, College of Natural and Applied Sciences, SUA. Currently, he is the head of the Department of Biosciences at SUA.
In terms of publications, Beda has made significant contributions to the field with over 30 journal articles, 3 book chapters, and 13 papers in edited conference proceedings, covering a wide range of topics from pathogens to disease vectors.
Outside of his academic pursuits, Beda enjoys watching football and actively participates in volleyball. He serves as the interim Chairman of the Morogoro Region Volleyball Association.
Beda obtained his PhD in Applied Zoology with a focus on the epidemiology of Taenia solium cysticercosis in humans from the University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
