Career Trajectory
Bio
I graduated from the University of Edinburgh with a 1st class MPhys degree in physics in 2001 before undertaking a summer internship in the group of Prof Doug Durian in UCLA physics. I then completed a PhD in the soft condensed matter physics group at the University of Edinburgh under the supervision of Prof Wilson Poon and Prof Stefan Egelhaaf on "Phase separation in binary phospholipid vesicles studied using fluorescence microscopy techniques", graduating in 2005. Following postdoc positions under the supervision of Prof Kyle Vanderlick in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Princeton University (2005-2008) and the Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering at Yale University (2008-2010), I was appointed to a tenure track research fellowship with a focus on biomedical and health research at the University of Leeds in the School of Chemistry. Promotions to Lecturer (2015), Associate Professor (2016), then Professor of Soft Matter and Biophysics (2022) followed. I am a member of the Astbury Centre for Structural Biology and Bragg Centre for Materials Research as multidisciplinary research centres facilitating collaborative research environments across the University of Leeds. My research programme focuses on membranes and vesicles, from fundamental biophysics to their applications in nanomedicine, bionanotechnology and bottom-up synthetic biology. Topics of particular current interest include: (i) material properties of hybrid lipid-block copolymer vesicles and their applications in nanomedicine and for membrane protein reconstitution in bionanotechnology; (ii) bottom-up fabrication of artificial cells, including engineering compartmentalisation and encapsulation of feedback-responsive (bio)chemistries; (iii) interactions of nanoparticles and peptides with lipid membranes, with particular relevance to nanotoxicity, nanomedicine and cancer therapy; (iv) biophysics of the Endosomal Sorting Complex Required for Transport (ESCRT) in membrane remodelling processes. I am a member of the editorial board of the book series Advances in Biomembranes and Lipid Self-Assembly (Elsevier) and the network coordination committee of the E.U. Softcomp network on soft matter composites with responsibility for network area 2 (biological and self-assembling systems).
