His main field of interest is the role of free radicals in drug toxicity and pathologies of the lung and the cardiovascular system. Moreover, the possibilities for therapeutic intervention with antioxidants (from food or as drugs) are explored.
He is registered in the Netherlands as an experimental pharmacologist and toxicologist. He (co-)authored over 650 papers and book chapters. He was chairman of the Dutch Toxicological Society, member of the Concilium Toxicologicum and member of the National Health Council.
