Bio
Barbara Parodi graduated in Medicine and Surgery at the University of Genoa, Italy, with an experimental thesis entitled: "Production and isotypic and functional characterization of monoclonal antibodies directed against conformational determinants of human immunoglobulins.",
Since 1984 she is employed at IST, the National Cancer Research Institute of Genoa, that from September 2011 merged with the main hospital of the town and is now part of the "IRCCS Ospedale Policlinico San Martino". She is responsible of the Unit Biological Resource Centre and executive manager of the core facility.
She has been deeply involved in biobanking for many years, dealing with scientific, organizational, technical and ethical issues. Her expertise is mainly in management, quality assurance and quality control in biobanks, Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP). She participated in the OECD Task Force on BRCs, as representative of the Italian Minister of Research (2000-2006), and contributed to the compilation of the OECD Best Practice Guidelines for Biological Resource Centres (2007). She has contributed to the European Infrastructure BBMRI since its Preparatory Phase. She takes part in the Steering Committee of the Italian national node of BBMRI-ERIC, with the role of project manager, chair of the Biobank evaluation committee and responsible of the common service on quality. She have served as treasurer In ESBB, is involved in several working groups and serves now as ambassador. She has been coordinator of the international working group “Parameters for a BioResource Impact Factor” sponsored by BBMRI and Gen2Phen Knowledge Centre. She is member of the International Cell Line Authentication Committee (ICLAC).
She has participated in several Advisory Boards: chair of the Telethon Genetic Biobank Network (TNGB) Scientific Advisory Board; VAS (Vascular independent research and education European organization) European Teaching Panel; Scientific Advisory Board CHRIS Study (Cooperative Health Research in South Tyrol), Istituto di Medicina Genetica /Centro per la Biomedicina, EURAC research, Bolzano; International Scientific Committee of the « Agence Nationale Française de la Recherche pour l’Appel à Projets Collections d’échantillons biologiques. Valorisation et Certification »;
She has been partner in several European projects: BBMRI Preparatory phase (www.bbmri.eu), Global BRC network demonstration project (http://www.GBRCN.org) with the role of linking the project to the European biobanking infrastructure BBMRI, co-chair Programme 4 Alliance against Cancer (Alleanza contro il cancro - ACC) for the promotion of international cooperation, action 5: Participation in the “European Bio-Banking and Biomolecular Resources Research Infrastructure”
Since 2004, Qualified person for the production of cells for therapy, nominated by decree of the Italian Agenzia del Farmaco (decree N. AIDT – 9/2004, L. 178/91). Since 1996 manager of the International Deposit Authority for patent purposes of Genoa.
She has been director of several courses on Biobanks, Cell factories, Biological Resource Centres, advisor for thesis Degrees in Biology and Biotechnology, , and teacher in seminars and stages for students in collaboration with the University of Genova.
She is author of 55 publications in peer-reviewed international journals, and participated in the compilation of several Guidelines in the biobanking field.
