Bio
Barbara Flueckiger was professor for film studies at the University of Zurich from 2007 to 2023, first as a guest professor, subsequently promoted to an associate professor in 2014 and to a full professor in 2017. At the end of January 2023 she became an emerita at the University of Zurich
Before her studies in film theory and history, she worked internationally as a film professional. Her research focuses on the interaction between technology and aesthetics.
She published two standard text books “Sound Design” and “Visual Effects”. Since 2001 she has developed and led many research projects funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation and the Swiss Commission for Technology and Innovation.
In 2011 she started to explore material and aesthetic aspects of historical film colors, published online as interactive digital humanities platform: Timeline of Historical Film Colors: https://filmcolors.org/ In the framework of her recent research projects she integrated digital humanities and deep learning tools for the analysis and visualization of films in collaboration with computer scientists.
Her recent research projects investigate the digitization and restoration of archival film, in collaboration with archives and the film industry.
In 2015 she was awarded the prestigious Advanced Grant by the European Research Council https://blog.filmcolors.org/2015/06/15/erc/ for a research project on the technology and aesthetics of film colors.
Subsequently she was promoted to full professor ad personam by the University of Zurich.
In 2018 she received a proof of concept for the development of a multispectral, versatile film scanner, and in 2021 with her interdisciplinary team a Bridge Discovery grant for "Scan2Screen. Development of an Automated Workflow for the Digitization of Archival Film" that integrates multispectral scanning into a sophisticated and future-proof workflow.
In 2019 the CCAAA honored her with JTS Technical Award “for extraordinary contributions to the technology of the audiovisual archiving field”.
From 2020 to 2021 she was a member of the Identification Committee for the European Research Council.
In 2021 she became a member of the advisory board for the exhibition "Color in Motion" at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Hollywood, supported by a grant from the Getty Foundation.
Since November 2021 she has been a visiting scholar at UC Berkeley.
"In recognition of her outstanding research focused on the digitization and restoration of archival color films" she received the James A. Lindner Archival Technology medal from the Society of Motion Pictures and Television Engineers in 2022 during the Award Ceremony in Hollywood.
2023 she was awarded the Turner Medal from the Colour Group (GB) in London 'in recognition of her outstanding contribution to the field of colour in film".
