Current research interest focus on various aspects of fish health, such as fish parasitology, fish immunology and fish pathology, including both wild and farmed fish. Barbara is an expert in amoebic gill disease, tuna health, epitheliocystis, vaccination, and management of parasitic diseases in aquaculture.
Research Themes
Barbara's research aligns to the University's Marine, Antarctic and Maritime and Environment, Resources and Sustainability research themes. Fish health can be investigated as an aspect of sustainable aquaculture and fisheries or as an indicator of environmental pollution. Some aspects of research on sustainability of aquaculture include management of parasitic diseases, including changes in husbandry and novel treatments. Health management also includes development of vaccines. Methods used to determine fish health have been successfully applied to aquatic toxicology. Research on fish parasites leads to discovery and description of new species which contributes to biodiversity.
