Bio
Ylstra is a full professor in tumor genome analysis at AmsterdamUMC in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. As the head of the Tumor Genome Analysis Core, he leads a team that specializes in Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) with focus on genome-wide chromosomal copy number analysis from archival (FFPE) materials. His lab develops dedicated algorithms and bioinformatic pipelines for preprocessing FFPE-derived NGS data and utilizes the extensive clinical follow-up information often associated with FFPE materials for the identification of markers of pathological subtypes, progression and treatment benefit. Some of these markers/profiles have been integrated into the WHO classification and are routinely applied in diagnostic molecular pathology.
Ylstra's academic journey began with a Bachelor's degree in Physics from the University of Amsterdam (UvA, NL) in 1988, followed by a Master's degree in Genetics at the Vrije Universiteit (VU, NL). He obtained his Ph.D. in 1995 from the same university, conducting research at the Universities of Vienna (Austria), Nijmegen (The Netherlands), Plant Research International (The Netherlands), and The John Innes Institute (United Kingdom). During his post-doctoral work at the University of California, Berkeley (USA), supported by a 2-year NATO fellowship, he focused on genome-wide RNA screens. In 1998, Ylstra joined the Comprehensive Cancer Center of the University of California, San Francisco (USA), where he made significant contributions to the development of DNA arrays for chromosomal copy number analysis. In 2001, he returned to the Netherlands to assume the position of heading the Tumor Genome Analysis Core at AmsterdamUMC, Cancer Center Amsterdam (CCA). Ylstra has been the coordinator of research for the Pathology department since 2008. From 2012 to 2023, he served as the president of the CCA-VU PhD school. Additionally, since 2012, he has been a Scientific Advisor for various external quality assessment (EQA) boards in the field of molecular cancer diagnostics.
Since 2023, Ylstra is also appointed at the IPATIMUP branch of the i3S of the University of Porto, Portugal, where he is senior researcher in the 'Intercellular Communication and Cancer' headed by Prof. Dr. José Carlos Machado
