个人简介
Dr. Bernard T. Drumm joined the academic faculty of the School of Health & Science at Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT) in 2020. Dr. Drumm undertook undergraduate studies in Applied Bioscience and Biopharmaceutical Science at DKIT, graduating with a 1st class honors degree in Biopharmaceutical Science and the Presidents Prize for Academic Excellence in 2008. After completing a summer studentship in the DkIT Smooth Muscle Research Centre (SMRC), Dr. Drumm began a PhD program with Professor Noel McHale within the SMRC in September 2008, examining intracellular calcium (Ca2+) signalling in specialized cells of urinary tract smooth muscle using confocal laser microscopy and Ca2+ imaging approaches. After spending a final year working in the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) Molecular Medicine research laboratory at Beaumont Hospital Dublin, Dr. Drumm successfully graduated with a PhD in Cell Physiology in 2013.
Upon PhD graduation, Dr. Drumm began a highly productive post-doctoral fellowship in the laboratory of Professor Kenton M. Sanders within the Department of Physiology & Cell Biology, at the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) School of Medicine, U.S.A. During this time, Dr. Drumm used transgenic animal models and optogenetic imaging to study neural regulation and pacemaking systems within gastrointestinal and urinary tract muscle, resulting in numerous high-impact publications and awards, including the Outstanding Postdoctoral Scholar Award from the Society of Pelvic Research and the Barcroft Early Career Medal from the Royal Academy of Medicine in Ireland. In 2018, Dr. Drumm was promoted to Research Assistant Professor at UNR, continued his research on smooth muscle Ca2+ signalling mechanisms, and lectured in various medical school, biology undergraduate and physiology graduate modules.
In 2020, Dr. Drumm was recruited to DkIT as an Assistant Lecturer in Molecular Biology and became a full Lecturer in 2021. Dr. Drumm continues to maintain strong research and teaching links with the UNR School of Medicine and currently holds a dual appointment within the UNR Department of Physiology & Cell Biology and the Physician Assistant Program as an adjunct Associate Professor. At DkIT, Dr. Drumm teaches on a diverse range of modules from 1st to 4th year including Biology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology and Environmental Chemistry. Dr. Drumm also maintains a research presence within the SMRC, conducting projects on the Ca2+ signalling pathways that lead to the generation of contractile behaviors in urinary tract smooth muscle. In 2022, Dr. Drumm completed a Masters (MA) program in Teaching & Learning In Higher Education through University College Cork (UCC) and actively pursues research on the scholarship of teaching & learning, with an emphasis on active learning and student engagement strategies. Dr. Drumm is an Editorial Board Fellow of The Journal of Physiology (2021-2023) and since 2021 has also served on the DkIT Academic Council.
