Bio
Dr. Aweke M. Gelaw has over 18 years of R&D experience mainly in the area of soil quality & health, natural resources management (NRM), and food security. Currently, he is working as a senior Advisor to the Natural Resources Sector of the Ethiopian Federal Ministry of Agriculture (MoA) in Addis Ababa. Dr. Aweke also served as Director of the Soil Health and Fertility Management Program at the Ethiopian Agricultural Transformation Agency (E-ATA) from FEB 2018 to SEP 2018. He received his PhD in Soil Science in SEP 2014 from the Norwegian University of Life Sciences, Norway, and he was a visiting Scholar (2010-2011) at the School of Environment and Natural Resources, The Ohio State University, USA. Dr. Aweke further did a Postdoctoral Research in Sustainable Natural Resources Management at the International Center for Biosaline Agriculture (ICBA) in Dubai, UAE from NOV 2016 to OCT 2017. In addition, Dr. Aweke had been working with the World Agroforestry Center (ICRAF) as a Consultant Scientist from FEB 2015 to JUL 2016 for the Dryland Systems Project in Ethiopia. Dr. Aweke began his career at Sirinka Agricultural Research Center in Ethiopia where he served for five years from JAN 2000 to AUG 2005 as a researcher in NRM and then worked at Mekelle University from SEP 2005 to NOV 2008 as a lecturer and other various capacities. He has also been a consultant to CIAT on Climate-Smart Agriculture, among others.
So far, he has authored and co-authored over 25 papers in referred journals, book chapters, and peer-reviewed conference proceedings. Among internationally reputable journals he published with includes GEODERMA, Experimental Agriculture, Land Degradation & Development, Agriculture Ecosystems and Environment, Sustainability, and Crop Improvement. He has also presented papers at various international and national conferences.
Dr. Aweke's research focus areas are: soil quality & health, soil and plant nutrition, fertilizer management, climate-smart agriculture (CSA), soil processes and greenhouse effects, and natural resources management (NRM) with emphasis on food security, restoration and rehabilitation of degraded soils, and sustainable agricultural intensification (SAI).
