Asija Začiragić, MD, MSc, PhD, born in Sarajevo in a year 1973, Associate Professor at the Department of Human Physiology, Faculty of Medicine University of Sarajevo, Cekalusa 90, 71 000 Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Dr. Začiragić received her MD at the Faculty of Medicine University of Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, in 2001. She was awarded by Dean’s Office of Medical Faculty University of Sarajevo for excellence in performance during her study years. She finished postgraduate studies in experimental-laboratory medicine in 2005. She received her MSc degree in year 2006. The title of her master thesis was “Serum C-reactive protein concentration in patients with diabetes mellitus type 1 and type 2”. She completed specialization in clinical immunology in 2008. She defended her PhD thesis under the title “An assessment of correlation between asymmetric dimethylarginine and C-reactive protein concentration in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus” in year 2011. Dr Začiragić completed post-doctoral studies from August 2014 until June 2015 at the Erasmus University Medical Centre Rotterdam, the Netherlands within ErasmusAGE Rotterdam Intergenerational Aging Research Centre. Main topic of Dr Začiragić’s post-doctoral training was Healthy Aging.
Dr Začiragić is working as the full-time Associate Professor at the Department of Human Physiology at Faculty of Medicine University of Sarajevo. Her professional activities include education of medical, dentistry and pharmacy students; her research interest encompasses the fields of inflammatory markers, markers of endothelial dysfunction and markers of oxidative stress in pathophysiology of type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus, Alzheimer’s disease, cardiovascular physiology and pathophysiology, basic and clinical immunology. Her professional training includes study visits to Institute of Physiology and Balneology, Medical Faculty University of Innsbruck, Austria and Institute of pharmacology and toxicology, Medical Faculty University of Hamburg, Germany. She attended Advanced Course in Immunology at University „Tor Vergata“, organized by Institutes of Immunology and Pathology in Rome, Italy; Third European Federation of Immunological Societis (EFIS) School of Immunology in Arandjelovac, Serbia; Workshop entitled „Introduction to Health Impact Assessment“ organized by the Johns Hopkins Bloomerg School of Public Health with the collaboration of the Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona, Spain; and many other medical conferences in Bosnia and Herzegovina and abroad. She was investigator in many international and domestic preclinical and clinical reserach projects. She is author and co-author of 47 papers published in domestic and international yournals, and was reviewer for numerous international and domestic yournals. Dr Začiragić is an author or coauthor of chapters in five books published in Bosnian and English language and was translator of the book “Your Amazing Immune System: How It Protects Your Body” from English to Bosnian language. This translation was authorized and approved by European Federation of Immunological Societies (EFIS). She is fluent in English and French language and has a basic knowledge of German language.
