Dr. Md. Ashraful Islam: A Distinguished Medical Educator, Practicing Physician, and Cancer Researcher
Dr. Md. Ashraful Islam is a distinguished medical educator, practicing physician, and cancer researcher with over 20 years of experience. He is known for his outstanding contributions to teaching medical students and residents, as well as his groundbreaking research on cancer biology and cancer stem cells.
Dr. Islam, a Kentuckian, was born in Bangladesh and earned his medical degree from Dhaka Medical College. He then completed a Ph.D. in biochemistry & cancer biology from the University of Tokyo in Japan. After his fellowship at the Department of Pediatric Oncology at the National Cancer Institute, NIH, Dr. Islam worked as a research scientist at the University of Louisville James Graham Brown Cancer Center. He then joined the faculty at the University of Tabuk in Saudi Arabia, where he taught clinical-related basic medical science and provided direct clinical patient care. He also takes pride in his work counseling a cohort of medical students with additional academic needs for the USMLE (United States Medical Licensing Examination) preparation.
In 2023, Dr. Islam joined the faculty at the PONCE School of Medicine in St. Louis. He currently teaches pharmacology, pathophysiology, medical biochemistry, medical genetics, infectious disease, and clinical skills. He is also involved in research on cancer biology and cancer stem cells.
Dr. Islam is a highly accomplished and respected medical educator. He is a recipient of the prestigious Japanese Government Scholarship (MONBUSHO award) and the International Conference on Radiation Research Travel Awards. He is also an active member of the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB) and the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR).
Dr. Islam is fluent in multiple languages, including English, Arabic, Japanese, Bengali, Hindi, and Urdu. He is a passionate educator who is dedicated to training the next generation of medical professionals. His groundbreaking research is making significant contributions to our understanding of cancer and its treatment.
