Bio
D Neves graduated in Environmental Engineering in 2005 and completed a MSc in Energy and Environmental Management in 2007, both from the University of Aveiro (UA). Since September 2013, he holds a PhD degree in Environmental Applied Sciences also from UA; within his PhD, cooperation was established with Chalmers University of Technology (Sweden) aiming to characterize the operation of an innovative 2-4MWth dual fluidized bed (FB) biomass gasifier. His contribution to this work was vital owing to the construction of two laboratorial facilities: at Aveiro a small fluidized bed reactor enabled to mimic biomass pyrolysis during conversion inside the large gasifier; at Chalmers he developed a novel on-line method to measure the elemental composition of the raw gasification gas. These two facilities enabled him, together with his colleagues, to close the mass and enthalpy balances of the Chalmers gasifier. His work in the field of biomass pyrolysis and gasification has sparked the interest of many researchers around the world as demonstrated by over 600 citations from two of his papers, one of which within the 1% most cited in the field of Engineering. Following his PhD, he worked as consultant in a boiler manufacturer where he designed and successfully demonstrated a 100kg/batch indirect biomass carbonization retort (2014); this prototype was the basis for new company producing charcoal in a modern factory. He worked as gas metrologist in a commercial laboratory in 2016. He also continued developing new bench-scale facilities like a second version of the online gasification gas analyzer (Chalmers), a bench-scale biomass steam distillation facility, or a bench-scale biomass oxy-gasifier during his most recent research work as post-doc at UA (2017). Researcher, entrepreneur and startup enthusiast with a passion for challenging the status quo of the bioenergy sector, he has funded or co-funded pilot-projects to valorize residual biomasses across the least developed regions of Portugal. This includes a project designed to demonstrate the recovery of fine chemicals from select shrubs; for this purpose, he operated a 300kg/batch steam distillation vessel coupled with a kW biomass-fired boiler for about 6 months Beiras region (2015). Another personal project is a 18m3 (about 10tons/batch) full-scale direct biomass carbonization kiln he has designed, constructed and tested in the Littoral region (since 2016) after an FCT project proposal designed to characterize the operation traditional charcoal kilns in Portugal has been refused for funding in 2015. He has participated in various international meetings related to biomass and wastes valorization, with the presentation of over 25 papers and posters. He has been reviewer of international journals. He has also participated in various research projects (e.g. Bias-to-soil, Biomashtech, Susphotosolutions, Charclean, Notargas) dealing with biomass thermochemical conversion processes.
