Bio
Prof. Dr. Anwaar Ahmed is a creative and self-driven professional with over three decades of experience in leading roles in academia, agriculture research, and extension in the public sector and international development organizations. At the moment, serving in a strategic capacity as a Sector Specialist (PPS-10 / BPS -20) at the Planning Commission of Pakistan, M/o Planning Development & Special Initiatives (PD &SI), Islamabad for policy Initiatives on the development of the agriculture, food, and nutrition sectors, national food security, green revolution, and the promotion of climate-resilient food systems in Pakistan. He evaluates the public sector development program and is also a policy advisor on the new development initiatives in agriculture, food, and nutrition. His professional life started in 1988 as a researcher at the Postharvest Research Institute in Faisalabad, Pakistan, studying the processing and value addition of fruits and vegetables. In the Government of Punjab, he spent over 17 years delivering crop production technology to farmers as an Extension Worker. His research interests as a Professor of Food Science & Technology at IFNS, PMAS-Arid Agriculture University Rawalpindi were concentrated on the nutritional enhancement of wheat flour, postharvest technology, and food safety. In his capacity as a Director of IFNS/Chairman of Food Technology, he started new degree programs on food safety and quality management and nutrition, developed new labs, managed the library, organized various seminars and conferences, and established an organization for the career development of students and mentoring. He published research in prominent worldwide magazines of agricultural and food science. As a result, he was honored with the Research Productivity Award in 2013 and 2015 by the MoST, Government of Pakistan. He earned research funds from several national and international organizations, notably HEC, FAO, USAID, UC DAVIS AIP, and GAIN. As a member of the Food Authority's Scientific Committee, he is responsible for establishing food standards in the Punjab and KPK provinces. He is an active member of FAO, SUN, SUNAR, SUN CSA, NI, and Nutrition Section, Ministry of Planning Development & Special Initiatives. He was a member of the team that developed an e-Learning course on Food Safety, a Manual for Food Handlers, the SUN National Nutrition Action Plan, the Pakistan Dietary Guidelines for Better Nutrition, and the Dashboard of Rawalpindi City's Sub-Urban Food System. He supervised over 70 M.Phil. and 5 Ph.D. students in Food Science. He completed a project funded by the Islamic Development Bank to increase Nigeria's capabilities in food processing. With recent projects with GAIN on "Attitudes and Behaviours Towards Consumption of Fortified Rice" and "Development of Sub-National Dashboard for the Urban Food System of Rawalpindi," Prof. Dr. Ahmed has also experience in designing alternate agriculture, climate change rehabilitation, resilient and sustainable agriculture. He recently completed FAO funded project on Capacity Building and Transformation of Food Systems with a Special Focus on Gender in Baluchistan. His significant achievement in Human Nutrition and Food Safety is the development of the Pakistan Dietary Guidelines for Better Nutrition, the development of an e-learning course on Food Safety, and the Manual for Food Handlers.
