Datta and his research group study the aeromechanics of advanced vertical lift aircraft. The major thrust areas are: eVTOL, high-speed tiltrotors, scalable algorithms for 3D structures, and Mars rotorcraft. At Ames, he worked on full-scale testing of the UH-60A Black Hawk rotor at the NFAC 40- by 80-ft tunnel, development of HPC-driven Scalable 3D aeroelastic solver - X3D, design exploration of eVTOL aircraft, and aeromechanics analysis of the JPL Mars Helicopter Technology Demonstrator (Ingenuity). During 2008-2013, he served as the structural dynamics lead of DOD CREATE-AV / Helios --- a multi-disciplinary high-fidelity simulation tool for future vertical lift aircraft. Datta is the founder and Chair of the eVTOL Provisional Technical Committee of the Vertical Flight Society (VFS) (formerly the American Helicopter Society (AHS)). He serves as an Associate Editor of the Journal of the American Helicopter Society (2009-present), a member of AHS Dynamics Committee (2009-2012, 2016-2019), a former member of the US Army's Vertical Lift Rotorcraft Center of Excellence review team (2012-2015), a member of AIAA Structural Dynamics Technical Committee (2012-present) and Chair of its Conferences Sub-committee (2016-present), and the inaugural Chair of NASA Aeronautics Research Institute (NARI)-led working group (II) on commercial intra-city Urban Air Mobility (2017-2018).
