Antonio TONIOLO, MD, FAMH
Retired Professor of Medical Microbiology, University of Insubria Medical School – Varese, Italy (since Nov. 2018). Retired Director, Laboratory of Clinical Microbiology, Ospedale di Circolo e Fondazione Macchi – Varese, Italy (since Nov. 2018). Medically-qualified Research and Clinical Microbiologist. Licensed for practicing Medicine and Clinical Microbiology in the EU and Switzerland. Served as Full Professor at Medical Schools of four Italian Universities: Pisa, Sassari, Pavia, Insubria. Visiting Professor at the Universities of Reims and Tokyo. Member, Centro Linceo Beniamino Segre, Roma. Member, Global Virus Network, Baltimore, MD, USA.
Served in tertiary care Academic Medical Centers. Expertise in culture-based and molecular microbiology. Contributed to the mission of his Department via participation in research and teaching programs, training residents and medical students, continuing medical education, designing tenders for diagnostic systems. Contributed to hospital epidemiology, infection control, antibiotic stewardship. Basic and translational research. Served as Director of Ph.D. programs in Medicine, acted as mentor for over 50 graduate students. Was leading a team of 25 for medical diagnosis and research. Was responsible for financial (7 ME turnover), quality, and strategic management. Expertise in automated microbiology (BD and Kiestra platforms, Accelerate Diagnostics, Abbott Molecular, Diasorin, Alifax) as well as in culture-based and molecular virology/bacteriology/mycology. Automated tests for susceptibility to antimicrobials (EUCAST and CLSI criteria). Serology and cell-mediated immunity to infectious agents. Mass spectrometry and genome sequencing for microbial identification. In 2015, his laboratory was renewed with state-of-the art technology and biosafety level up to BSL3. Half million tests/year. Lab services and revenue have been increasing 5-20% year over year. Upon implementing rapid diagnostics and IT capable of real-time interaction with hospital wards, private clinics, general practitioners, individual patients, his Medical Center has seen a reduction of hospital infections and hospital stay.
Current research: viral etiology of chronic disorders (diabetes, autoimmune thyroid conditions, post-polio syndrome, chronic cardiomyopathy); molecular microbiology; diabetes-related infections. Member: Global Virus Network (Baltimore, MD), Virus in Diabetes Study Group (Sydney, AU), Network of Pancreatic Organ Donors (Miami, FL). Funding: Italian Ministry of Health, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (USA), the University of Miami (USA), the European Polio Union (Belgium), Post-Polio Health International (USA), The University of Tokyo (Japan), the RIKEN Institute (Japan), the Norwegian Research Council. Clinical studies with Pharma and CROs.
