Bio
My research is driven by the aim to develop novel complex biologics with impact in Human and Animal Health. The basis for my work lies on the use and integration of multidisciplinary technologies such as synthetic biology, evolutionary and bioprocess engineering, and bottom-up systems biology to fasten the generation of the products Im interested in subunit vaccines, particularly virus-like particles (VLPs), against infectious and/or neglected diseases (e.g. Influenza, Dengue, Chagas, onchocerciasis, haemorrhagic fever).
With my PhD I have designed and implemented in silico mathematical models for process control and optimization of a human vaccine candidate, namely Rotavirus-VLPs. This work pioneered the area as for the first time a comprehensive, integrative view of the production system was capture in mathematical and thermodynamical equations. This was performed at ITQB-UNL, iBET and FCT-UNL (Portugal) under the supervision of Rui Oliveira and Manuel Carrondo. The scientific quality of the PhD dissertation was recognized as the 2011 best PhD thesis of ITQB-UNL. Following PhD I was geared towards having a deeper understanding of Systems Biology and how one could apply it to bioprocess engineering. The next, obvious step was to move to Jens Nielsen lab at Chalmers University of Technology (CHT, Sweden). During these 3 years period I was a senior researcher and director of fermentation technology, and developed a full set of omics skills that revealed essential for detailed characterization of the cell factory I was working with. In 2014 I joined the Animal Cell Technology Unit (ACTU) at iBET (Portugal), headed by Paula Alves and Manuel Carrondo, as Senior Scientist with the objective of applying the know-how acquired during PhD and post-doc periods to the development of biologics and processes for vaccines production. In 2015 I was awarded with the Investigador FCT grant from the Portuguese Science Foundation. Since January 2019 Im heading the Cell-based Vaccines Development Laboratory at ACTU, accumulating this function with the coordination of the Late-stage R&D Bioproduction Unit at iBET since January 2021. Im also a senior researcher at iNOVA4Health Advancing Precision Medicine at iBET.
To support my research, I secured as PI/co-PI funding from national and European public/private funding (4 in total) as well as from pharma/biotech companies (6 in total). The integrative nature of my expertise has been essential in other projects of the ACTU, where I have acted either as project manager (17 in total) or as team member (14 in total).
Mentored and co-supervised undergraduate, B.Sc., Ph.D. students and post docs at both institutions where I have been. At CHT, I managed a small team responsible for the supervision and maintenance of small-scale bioreactors, coordinating specific fermentation activities and organizing yearly workshops dedicated to fermentation kinetics. At iBET, I lead a team of 20 researchers, i.e. 2 MSc student, 5 Research Technicians, 6 PhD students and 7 Post-docs. In addition, I coordinate/teach courses on Animal Cell Technology, Bioprocess Engineering, Biofuels and Manufacturing and Quality Process Control on PhD and MSc Programs of Portuguese and Foreign Universities.
I have authored 27 manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals and 3 book chapters. Noteworthy is total number of citations (> 1250) and the h-index (15) considering the competitiveness of the scientific area (Engineering and Technology) and my short scientific career. I have presented 26 oral (invited) communications, demonstrating the scientific competences, originality and international recognition of my research.
Over the next 5 years I want to consolidate my research career and continue developing novel bioprocesses for production of vaccines against high-impact (economic- and human-wise) diseases, thus providing solutions to those who most need.
