Bio
Antonio Punzo was born on April 19, 1981. He graduated in Statistical and Actuarial Sciences from the University of Calabria in 2004, he earned a Doctorate in Methodological and Applied Statistics
at the University of Milano-Bicocca in 2008, and in the two-year period June 2008–June 2010 he was Research Fellow of Statistics at the Department of Economics and Business of the University of Catania. Since November 2010, he is Assistant Professor in Statistics at the Department of Economics and Business at the University of Catania, where he teaches a basic course of Statistics for undergraduate students and he supervises degree theses. In his career, he has also taught courses on data analysis and advanced inference. In the period February–July 2013, Antonio Punzo was Visiting Professor of Statistics at the Department of Mathematics & Statistics of the University of Guelph (Ontario, Canada), where he also supervised a PhD student thesis.
His primary research interests are in model-based clustering and classification, with a focus on mixture-based approaches. In particular, recent work has focused on contaminated mixtures, cluster-weighted models, and mixtures of unimodal densities. Beyond clustering and classification, he engages in research around computational statistics, EM algorithm, resampling methods, bias reduction techniques, multiple testing procedures, parametric/nonparametric item response theory, and nonparametric models applied to mortality data. He has introduced several computational/methodological advances on these topics that, in addition to be presented at many international conferences, often in the form of invited talks, have been also published in the following top international journals (see the list of scientific publications for details):
- The American Statistician
- Journal of Time Series Analysis
- Journal of Statistical Software (2 papers)
- Computational Statistics & Data Analysis
- Statistical Modelling
- Advances in Data Analysis and Classification
- Advances in Statistical Analysis
- Methodology and Computing in Applied Probability
- Statistical Papers
- Statistical Methods & Applications
- Computational Statistics
- Communications in Statistics - Simulation and Computation
- Communications in Statistics - Theory and Methods
- Psicológica
- Electronic Journal of Applied Statistical Analysis
- Statistics in Transition
The results of this research activity have been also presented within many seminars held in several Italian and foreign Universities. The methodological/computational advances have been carried out together with the development of relevant applications concerning credit risk, health, and mortality data. Antonio Punzo is developing this research activity jointly with many researchers/professors coming mainly from: University of Guelph, University of Milano-Bicocca, University of Perugia, and University of Catania. He served as a Referee for the following top international journals (listed in alphabetic order): Advances in Data Analysis and Classification, Canadian Journal of Statistics, Communications in Statistics - Simulation and Computation, Communications in Statistics - Theory and Methods, Computational Statistics & Data Analysis, IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence, Journal of Multivariate Analysis, METRON, Journal of Methodological and Applied Statistics, and Italian Journal of Applied Statistics. In addition, he is member of the Editorial Board of Italian Journal of Applied Statistics and a member of the following professional societies: Classification and Data Analysis Group (CLADAG), Società Italiana di Statistica (SIS), and Statistical Society of Canada (SSC). Antonio Punzo participates in the granted project FIRB 2011: Modelli mistura e a variabili latenti per l’inferenza causale e l’analisi di dati socio-economici (Principal Investigator: Prof. F. Bartolucci). He was member of the Organizing Committee for the International Workshop “MBC2 - Workshop on Model-Based Clustering and Classification” (Catania, September 6–7, 2012) and for the International Scientific Meeting: “Cladag 2009” (Catania, September 9–11, 2009), and he is member of of the second edition of the International Workshop “MBC2 - Workshop on Model-Based Clustering and Classification” (Catania, September 3–5, 2014). Furthermore, He organized a session entitled Model-Based Clustering for the “9th Scientific Meeting of the Classification and Data Analysis Group (CLADAG) of the Italian Statistical Society” (University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, Modena, Italy, September 18–20, 2013).
