Bio
After successfully completing a doctoral degree (Mode of Action of the herbicide glyphosate in the soya-Bradyrhizobium japonicum symbiosis), I obtained a two-year Postdoc position (Basque Government funding) in the laboratory of SO Duke, in the National Center for the Development of Natural Product, Natural Product Utilization Research Unit, USDA. Oxford Mississippi USA (Effect on plants and mode of action of inhibitors of terpenoid synthesis and Isolation / Mode of action of terpenoid phytotoxins). When finishing and returned to Spain, I was contracted in the Department of Plant Biology and Ecology, Faculty of Science and Technology (UPV/EHU) as a full-time interim professor. Later, I stayed as a postdoc for two years in the same Department (Development of bioindicators and bioassays for stress detection in plants). Thanks to the know-how experience, I was selected by a construction company in Madrid (OHL, Obrascon Huarte Lain) to develop an R + D + i project (funded by the Ministry of Science and Technology, PROFIT and CDTI) to evaluate the success of specific measures promoting environmental recovery in linear communication path, mainly in highways and rail ways. Subsequently, I returned to the UPV/EHU when I obtained a research contract and after I was granted an interim professor's contract for 8 years. Recently (2016) I have passed the public examination for a permanent position to become Aggregate Profesor in the Department of Plant Biology and Ecology (UPV/EHU). I belong to the research group EKOFISKO (Ecophysiology of Stress and Pollution in Plants) led by JM Becerril. Currently the scientific-technical interest of my research is based on the dynamic responses of plants to environmental stresses (mainly abiotics) and the mechanisms of adaptation and acclimatization that allow them to grow in different environments, in particular those relating to metal-contaminated sites. Our long experience has allowed us to develop from a set of plant indicators and soil microbial biomarkers to be applied to solve environmental problems (climate change, pollution), which constitutes my basic research line. My applied research line of work is PHYTOMANAGEMENT, and in particular Phytoremediation (the use of plants and associated microorganisms to reduce adverse effect of contamination in soils), either with metal phytoextraction strategies, or with phytostabilization strategies, topic where I have directed two doctoral thesis.
