Career Trajectory
Bio
I got my degree in Chemistry (Biochemistry major) in 1992 at the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM). I got my PhD. in 1996 at the Autonomous University of Madrid (UAM). My research was focused on new findings implicated in the biosynthesis of Thyroid Hormones, particularly in thyroid hormone biosynthesis in thyroglobulin molecule.
In 1996, I started my post-doc at Dr. Carrasco’s lab at Albert Einstein College of Medicine (AECOM) (NY, USA). The sodium/iodide symporter (NIS) is the key step in thyroid hormone biosynthesis. This allowed me to work in a novel and fascinating field that was just starting. My work was focused on determining the structural and functional properties of the NIS to understand its physiological role, its involvement in human pathology and its key role in thyroid cancer treatment. From 1998 to 2008, we published novel and highly cited works in the field of thyroid. In 2006, I joined Dr. Santisteban’s lab at the Instituto de Investigaciones Biomédias (CSIC-UAM) in Spain. In 2007, I obtained my first national research Project and established myself as an independent group.
In 2008, I obtained a permanent position as Tenured Scientist at “Instituto de Salud Carlos III (Majadahonda, Madrid), Spain. My lab is part of the chronic diseases programme (UFIEC), and I am head of the Endocrine Tumors Unit. I am also a Research of the CiberOnc (Ciber of Cancer). Since 2008, I am also a member of the TiroSEEN group belonging to the Spanish Society of Endocrinology and Nutrition (SEEN) where we address issues related to national iodine deficiency diseases and/or thyroid hormones, included thyroid cancer. The group is working on the elaboration of common clinical guidelines for the management and treatment of such diseases. I am member of the European Thyroid Association (ETA) since 2016, the European Society of Endocrinology (ESE) since 2011 and the European Association for Cancer Research (EACR) since 2019.
The Endocrine Tumors Unit´s primary goal is to study the molecular mechanism of thyroid and ovary pathophysiology. On one hand we try to find and understand the physiological mechanisms involved in thyroid and ovarian physiology. We focus on the molecules that regulate these processes and looking into molecules which in turn regulate these (at transcriptional and translational level). On other hand, we also try to decipher how these molecules can be used to fight endocrine tumors (thyroid, mammary and ovarian). We also look into the mechanisms by which diabetes (a high prevalence chronic disease) can lead to cancer. The future of the unit is to find the elusive players in tumorigenesis processes so we can understand relatively effective therapies which are currently used, and suggest new strategies in the treatment of cancer.
I am currently a member of the EU-NETVAL European Commission (European Union Network of Laboratories for the Validation of Alternative Methods) participating as an expert in the validation and implementation of methods aimed at identifying endocrine disruptors. Currently, I have obtained funds to participate in the WP5 in PARC (European Partnerships from Horizon Europe 2021-2027) in the development of new methodology and the molecular mechanisms involved to evaluate thyroid disruptors. The ultimate goal is to find out which are the endocrine disruptors, understand their mechanisms of action and finally how they affect human health and prevent such effects.
