个人简介
António Francisco Ambrósio (AFA) is Coordinator Investigator/Full Professor at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Coimbra (FMUC). He is the Head of Retinal Dysfunction and Neuroinflammation Lab at Coimbra Institute for Clinical and Biomedical Research (iCBR-FMUC), since 2002. AFA was the Director of iCBR between 2016 and 2021 (5 years). iCBR and Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology (CNC) are members of the consortium CIBB (Center for Innovative Biomedicine and Biotechnology). Presently, AFA is member of the Executive Committee of the PhD Program in Health Sciences at FMUC. He is also member of the Board of Directors of the Collaborative Laboratory (CoLab) VectorB2B - Drug Developing - Association for Research in Biotechnology (representing the University of Coimbra). Former professional activities include, among others: member of the Directory Board and of the Scientific Council of CIBB (2016-2021); Coordinator of the Research Management Office at FMUC (2016-2019); Vice-Director for Scientific Research at FMUC (2012-2015); President, vice-President and Secretary-General of the Portuguese Biochemical Society (2005-2014); Secretary-General (2005-2007) and co-founder of the Portuguese Society for Stem Cells and Cell Therapies; President of the Portuguese Association of Biochemists (2000-2004).
AFA has been deeply involved in post-graduation activities at FMUC, namely in the Master in Biomedical Research, the Master in Molecular and Translational Neuroscience, and the PhD Program in Health Sciences, being in charge of the Vision Sciences area, which is a strategic scientific area at FMUC. Moreover, he has supervised 10 post-docs, 25 PhD students, 30 MSc students and 30 research fellows. AFA has published 162 peer-reviewed papers, 10 book chapters, holds an H factor of 40 and has 4855 citations (Web of Science). The total funding gathered from national and international agencies, pharmaceutical companies and research programs surpasses 5 million Euros, as Principal Investigator in 19 major projects. He was also awarded the prestigious Award 'Prémio Mantero Belard - Prémios Santa Casa Neurociências' in 2015. AFA has been invited speaker in national and international meetings and seminars (more than 50 talks) and grant reviewer for national and international Foundations from UK, Germany, Switzerland, Netherlands, Poland, etc.Along his career he has been involved in many outreaching activities for young students and the general public.
His main scientific interests are focused on retinal degenerative diseases, namely diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration, which are leading causes of vision loss and blindness worldwide, and more recently inherited degenerative diseases (rare diseases). More specifically, he has been interested in elucidating the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying retinal dysfunction and degeneration, paying particular attention to the role played by neuroinflammation mediated by microglial cells (the immune cells of central nervous system), as well as to cell-cell crosstalk. AFA has been also interested in identifying new drug targets and developing advanced therapies for retinal diseases based on intravitreal implants, but also for anterior segment diseases, such as keratoconus and fungal keratitis, using nanoparticles activated by light. Moreover, he is interested in establishing novel biomarkers of disease onset and progression for retinal degenerative diseases, namely biomarkers based on texture analysis of optical coherence tomography data and biomolecules present in tears. His Lab uses a plethora of in vitro and animal models of disease and has all the necessary equipment for assessing in vivo retinal structure, function and animal behavior, and particularly visual acuity.
