Bio
Dr. Antoni Colom has two undergraduate degrees, one in Human Nutrition and Dietetics (2007) and another in Food Science and Technology (2010) (University of Valencia, Spain). He has completed a Master's Degree in Human Nutrition and Food Quality (2011) and the Master's Degree in Medical and Health Sciences (2013), both from the University of the Balearic Islands. He successfully completed his PhD in Translational Research in Public Health and High Prevalence Diseases from the University of the Balearic Islands with honours (cum laude) (2021). During this pre-doctoral period, he participated in several research projects related to the effect of weight loss and chronic diseases (AES 2017, PI17/00525; AES 2020, PI20/00138) at the University Hospital Son Llatzer. During his time as a doctoral student, he has led as first author 3 scientific articles that are part of his doctoral thesis (2 indexed in first quartile journals and 1 indexed in first decile journal of the Journal Citation Reports)
and has participated in an additional 6 scientific articles (5 indexed in first quartile journals and 1 indexed in first decile journal of the Journal Citation Reports). He has an h-index of 7 (WoS), with a citation average of 10.6 and a total of 170 citations.
During these years, Dr. Antoni Colom has opened a new line of research on spatial epidemiology, and specifically on the role of the environment on the determinants of chronic diseases, which has allowed him to establish collaborations with national and international researchers forming a large collaboration network within the framework of the PREDIMED-PLUS trial which has led him to participate in the quality control team of the PREDIMED-Plus trial. In addition, Dr. Antoni Colom was invited to give a seminar entitled “The Mediterranean lifestyle, what about our surrounding environments?” to the Melbourne School of Population and Global Health, University of Melbourne (Australia, 12 July 2018) and started an international collaboration with Dr. Suzanne Mavoa, which has resulted in a publication (Age and Aging Journal 2020: Colom et al. Neighborhood walkability and physical activity: Moderating role of a physical activity intervention in overweight and obese older adults with metabolic syndrome).
His perseverance in his work during his predoctoral period has allowed him to continue to link as principal investigator of the project “Influence of Obesogenic Environments during a Weight Loss Intervention (PRE-ENVIRONS)” where he analysed the impact of obesogenic environments (the active living environment, the food environment and the social environment) during an intentional weight loss intervention programme.
He completed a four-month postdoctoral research stay at the Physical Activity and Health Promotion Research Group (AFIPS; GIUV2013-016) at the University of Valencia. (July 7, 2021 – June 15, 2021). Additionally, he has a 3 month postdoctoral research stay in the research group on Epidemiology, Physical Activity with Acceleration, and Nutrition (Epi-PHAAN) of the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Malaga.
He has experience in teaching at University level, within the nursing degree program of the Balearic Islands. He is responsible for the subject Education and Health Promotion since the 2020-2021 academic year. Where currently he is supervising 1 student collaborator and 1 PhD thesis.
He is currently a member of the Epidemiology, Physical Activity, Accelerometry and Nutrition (EpiPHAAN) research group at the The Malaga Biomedical Research Institute (IBIMA) directed by the Dra. Julia Wärnberg (Principal Investigator). The Nutritional Epidemiology and Cardiovascular Physiopathology (NUTRCOR) research group at the Balearic Islands Health Research Institute (IdISBa) and at the Biomedical Research Center in Network-Physiopathology of Obesity and Nutrition (CIBEROBN) directed by the Dra. Dora Romaguera (Principal Investigator). In addition, Antoni also belongs to the Molecular Biology and Global Health research group, directed by Dr. Josep Mercader Barceló, Professor at the University of the Balearic Islands.
