Bio
António Teixeira is an Associate Professor of open, distance and network education at Universidade Aberta (UAb) and a senior reseracher at the Distance Education and eLearning Laboratory (LE@D). He was Pro-Rector of Innovation in Distance Education and has directed the Department of Education and Distance Learning at UAb. He is also a researcher at the University of Lisbon and collaborates with the Università degli Studi Roma Tre and the Università degli Studi di Modena e Reggio Emilia, in Italy. In addition, he is the director of the Master in eLearning Pedagogy at UAb.
He received his training in Philosophy at the University of Lisbon (MPhil - 1994, PhD - 2003) and is an expert on Philosophy of Art and Aeshetics. His PhD thesis was on the topic of Philosophy of Art History and focused on the philosophical work of Francisco de Holanda. He has also received training in online education at the University of Turku (2004). From 2006 to 2009, as a Pro-rector for innovation in Distance Learning at UAb, he conceived and managed the strategic transition process of the university from a print-based distance learning institution to a fully online one. He was also responsible for the design and initial implementation of the university’s research lab on distance education and eLearning (LEaD) and the university’s open access scientific repository (Repositório Aberto). Later he headed the Department of Education and Distance Learning (2016-20)
From 2007 to 2009, he was a member of the Academic and Administration boards of the Asia’s International Open University (UAIA) and of the Portuguese Rectors Council (CRUP) specialized committees on Scientific Research and Knowledge Transfer, and Evaluation, Quality and Innovation. He was also the President of EDEN – European Distance and E-learning Network (2013-16), the largest association of open education and online learning in Europe. Additionally, he was a Director at the Ibstpi – International Board of Standards for Training, Performance and Instruction.
Presently he’s a member of the International Advisory Board of the Distance Education and Learning Futures Alliance of the Massey University (New Zealand) and the Vice-president of the Ad Lucem Association (University of Lisbon). He's also a member of the Board of the Council of EDEN Fellows. In addition, he serves as well an external expert for AQU Catalunya and ACPUA quality assurance agencies in Spain and the research and innovation national agency of Uruguay (ANII), among others.. Additionally, he’s on the scientific board of over a dozen international journals on education and on philosophy.
António Teixeira has participated in close to forty international research projects, mostly funded by the European Commission and the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation. His major research focus being on educational innovation and open education, in particular OERs, OEPs and MOOCs, as well as lifelong learning. He co-designed the iMOOC, the first institutional pedagogical model in the world dedicated to MOOCs, and the ECO sMOOC model. He also researches on the relation between philosophy and education with a special attention to ethical issues. Additional topics of research include aesthetics and philosophy of art.
He has delivered close to two hundred presentations at international conferences and published over one hundred and fifty scientific articles and other publications. He was a visiting scholar at the Korean National Open University (South Korea) and is an EDEN Senior Fellow for demonstrating excellence in professional practice of open, distance and e-learning.
