个人简介
Anne-Teresa holds a PhD in Geography from the University of the West Indies, Mona with experience in rural livelihood, food security, and climate change adaptation. She has worked with various local and regional multidisciplinary projects centred on reducing the risk to climate change and improving the livelihoods of rural communities. For the research project ‘Surviving the Drought: An Irrigation Curriculum for Jamaica’s Small-Scale Farmers’, she has worked with the Barilla Center for Food and Nutrition (BCFN) to build knowledge capacities and implement adaptive irrigation strategies in local farming communities. This project led her to be one of the recipients of the 2017 Prime Minister’s Youth Award for Excellence in International Achievement.
She is also the Vice President of the Jamaican Women in Coffee (JAWiC) ― the national chapter of IWCA which focuses on women’s empowerment and gender equity within the island’s coffee industry. As a non-profit organization, JAWiC aims to improve women’s participation in the coffee value chain, improve the production and quality of their coffee for local and international markets, and facilitate women with the power of a collective voice, while uplifting them as leaders within their communities and the industry.
As a national consultant, Dr. Birthwright has worked with the Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center (CATIE) to develop Jamaica’s first Climate Change Research Agenda. The Agenda champions the role of science in solving societal problems, as well as supports the achievement of climate change targets identified in relevant policy frameworks, including the Nationally Determined Contribution and the island’s National Development Plan—Vision 2030. She has also worked with a team of consultants on the “Adaptation Programme and Financing Mechanism (AP&FM-PPCR) Project” where the aim was to achieve increased mainstreaming/integration of climate change considerations focusing mainly on adaptation measures in five sectors: coastal resources, water, health, human settlements, and tourism. Similarly, she co-authored Jamaica’s first Adaptation Communication (AdCom). As an inaugural document, the development of Jamaica’s AdCom was crucial in the negotiation process at the United Nations 26th Conference of Parties on Climate Change (COP26) held in Glasgow, Scotland. Furthermore, it heightened the importance of incorporating scientific considerations in national and sectoral development policies, strategies, and programmes.
Currently, she is a Science, Technology and Policy (STeP) Fellow with the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) where she works to strengthen science diplomacy on global environmental change across the Americas.
