I am a palaeontologist, who uses interdisciplinary research of combined sedimentary geology and fossil plants, to understand changes in plant community ecosystems through time and to understand plant relationships to past terrestrial environments and climates. I focus mainly on the Cretaceous-Cenozoic time periods.
I completed a PhD at The University of Melbourne in 2000 and held a postdoctoral fellowship for three years with the University of Leeds and the British Antarctic Survey, Cambridge, U.K. Fossil plants collected from the field in Antarctica during my postdoctorate were used to interpret past forest ecosystems and associated climates of the most rapid warming event of the Cenozoic. I spent the following four years as Lecturer at Latrobe University, before joining the School of Earth Sciences, The University of Melbourne, in 2010. My current research projects include: ancient ecosystems of the Cretaceous of southeastern Australia; biodiversity response to climate change in Antarctica during the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum; and plant-insect interactions and co-evolution through the Mesozoic to Cenozoic.
