Career Trajectory
Bio
After medical school and a diagnostic imaging residency at the University of Alberta, Anna Zavodni completed a cardiovascular imaging fellowship at the National Institutes of Health in the United States. While at the NIH, she experimented with novel cardiovascular assessment techniques using MRI, CT and FDG-PET in patients with both common cardiovascular risk factors and rare genetic mutations. Dr. Zavodni gained skills in evaluating large data sets while analyzing the results of the multi-centre Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA). In addition to her fellowship training, she earned a Master’s of Health Sciences in Clinical Research through Duke University. Dr. Zavodni joined the faculty of the University of Toronto in 2012. She works at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre as the divisional head of cardiothoracic imaging and is cross-appointed to the Schulich Heart Program and Sunnybrook Research Institute. The focus of Dr. Zavodni’s current research is the non-invasive assessment of atherosclerotic disease using state-of-the-art MRI, CT, ultrasound and molecular imaging techniques. She is interested in the quantitative characterization of plaque burden in various vascular beds for the purposes of prognostic assessment and longitudinal follow-up. Her projects attempt to develop a better understanding of vascular remodeling in response to aging, lifestyle, risk factor modification, medical therapy and surgical management.
