Angelo Gemignani

Angelo Gemignani is currently a medical doctor, a psychiatrist, and a doctor in psychology. He is also a full professor of neuroscience with the University of Pisa. He is also the director of the Department of Surgical, Medical and Molecular Pathology and Critical Care Medicine; the director of the master in neuroscience, mindfulness and contemplative practices; and the director of the Clinical Psychology Branch, Pisa University Hospital. His research activity is mainly devoted to the study of psychobiological mechanisms of sleep functions, consciousness, and its related nonordinary states (i.e., induced by meditation), and negative emotions. As a PI of international research projects on adaptive mental and somatic reactions to huge stressful conditions, he studied sleep and consciousness changes in different human experimental models from elite apnea divers to healthy volunteers simulating the human flight to Mars in the context of MARS 500 and SIRIUS frameworks projects.
