Bio
I Received Bsc. in Medical microbiology (2008) from the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (Nairobi, Kenya). On obtaining my degree, I worked with Nagasaki University Institute of Tropical Medicine (Japan) in collaboration with the Kenya Medical Research Institute (Nairobi, Kenya) on various aspects causing diarrhea in children under 5 years in Kenya. To further my education,I pursued a master of science degree in Molecular Biology with a major in human health (2011) at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (Belgium), after which I obtained a PhD in Bio-science Engineering at the KU Leuven University( Belgium) from the department of Microbial and Molecular Systems at the laboratory of Food Microbiology (2017). My PhD work focused on the genetic elucidation of the influence of bacteriophages on the behavior of the food pathogen Salmonella Typhimurium with particular interest on newly identified invasive non-Typhoidal salmonella strains from Sub-Saharan Africa. I acquired expertise in both classical as well as state-of-the-art bacterial genetics which is vital in studying phage host interactions. Following this, I was hired as SFI post-doctoral fellow at the University College Cork (UCC, Ireland) where I embarked on a new project aimed towards establishing the functional Analysis of the Host Adsorption and DNA Injection Processes of Lactococcal Bacteriophages. My research activities included the molecular biology of bacteriophages infecting lactic acid bacteria with the aim of understanding phage-host interactions and the development of novel anti-phage strategies. Having acquired vast technical experience in phage research, I am currently working at the International Livestock Research Institute( Nairobi-Kenya) post-doctoral fellow providing my technical expertise in the field of antimicrobial resistance and how phages could be used as a potential alternative to control the growing problem of antimicrobial resistance in Salmonella isolated from poultry farms in Kenya.
