Bio
In 1998 he initiated a line of research to better understand the role of the extranuclear actions of estrogen receptors in the endocrine pancreas. The findings of this line of research have been important for a molecular understanding of the low-dose effects triggered by Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals (EDCs) with estrogenic activity, mainly bisphenol-A. In 2006, his research group demonstrated that bisphenol-A exposure induced hyperinsulinemia and insulin resistance in adult male mice. Later, they found that bisphenol-A exposure during pregnancy predisposed male offspring, as well as treated mothers, to type 2 diabetes mellitus. These findings have been instrumental in establishing the link between EDC exposure and diabetes mellitus. His interest continues in the study of how the environment affects β-cell division, death and function and its involvement in the development of diabetes. He has been recognized with the Spanish Diabetes Society awards for best young researcher (2004) and the Alberto Sols award for basic research in diabetes (2017).
During the last decade, he has been an invited speaker at more than 50 scientific meetings in America, Asia, Africa and Europe. He co-chairs, with Juliette Legler, the Gordon Research Conference on Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals 2024, Il Ciocco, Italy. He is regularly involved in improving the translation of EDC science into regulation.
