Bio
Andrzej Bytnerowicz has developed and applied existing methodologies for large-scale monitoring of air pollutants such as ozone and nitrogenous gases in forests and other ecosystem in remote areas and those affected by urbanization, agriculture an industrial activities. He has developed passive sampler for monitoring gaseous nitric acid which is a major contributor to dry deposition of atmospheric nitrogen to ecosystems. He has applied geostatistical techniques for designing reliable monitoring networks and developing maps of air pollutants distribution in complex mountain topography. He has developed an empirical inferential model for quantifying nitrogen deposition and evaluation of its ecological effects in Mediterranean ecosystems. In collaboration with other scientists he has evaluated present and projected future interactive effects of air pollution and climate change on forests. Andrzej has been a PI for a multi-institutional project “Distribution of ozone, ozone precursors and gaseous components of atmospheric nitrogen deposition in the Lake Tahoe Basin”. Recently he has been coordinating studies at remote receptor areas of California, the White Mountains Research Center and Devils Postpile National Monument in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, which provide important information on background levels of air pollution and impacts of wildland fires on air quality. His research methodologies have been widely used in California, United States, Canada, Mexico, and Europe.
