Bio
My background is in molecular and cellular immunology research, with emphasis on MHC molecular genetics (1979-1984), peripheral T cell tolerance (1984-1997) and T cell regulation mediated by the enzyme indoleamine 2,3 dioxygenase, IDO (1997-present). In 1998 we reported that IDO regulates T cell immunity, establishing a novel paradigm in understanding how T cell regulation occurs at sites of inflammation. This finding led to new immunotherapies to treat cancer and infections and to protect healthy tissues from immune-mediated destruction by manipulating IDO. Based on our research, a proprietary IDO inhibitor is under scrutiny in Phase II trials as a potential immune checkpoint blockade inhibitor in cancer patients. My research objectives are to elucidate how IDO contributes to inflammatory and immunologic processes that promote or alleviate disease in mouse models of cancer, infectious and autoimmune diseases and transplantation. Current research goals are to evaluate the role of DNA sensing pathways in regulating autoimmunity and promoting tumorigenesis, developing novel immunotherapies by manipulating IDO, and elucidating how IDO enhances pain, a common co-morbidity associated with many inflammatory syndromes of clinical importance
