Career Trajectory
Bio
Professor Andrew Vallely has a joint appointment with the Kirby Institute for Infection and Immunity in Society, UNSW Sydney; and the Papua New Guinea Institute of Medical Research, Goroka, PNG. Andrew has over 25 years experience in international public health, HIV/STI and infectious disease interventions research.
He has designed and coordinated clinical and qualitative research in Australia, Kenya, Myanmar, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Tanzania, United Kingdom and Vanuatu. He leads an international collaborative research group in HIV and sexual health that he established between the Papua New Guinea Institute of Medical Research (PNGIMR) and UNSW in 2007. This interdisciplinary group involves researchers across the disciplines of clinical epidemiology and public health, medical anthropology, sociology, molecular biology and clinical laboratory sciences; and supports over 40 early and mid-career researchers based at the Sexual & Reproductive Health Unit that he established at the PNGIMR in 2010.
Andrew is currently leading research to evaluate innovative approaches to cervical cancer screening and prevention using HPV-DNA point-of-care testing; and a cluster randomized crossover trial to investigate point-of-care STI testing and treatment to improve maternal and neonatal health in high-burden, resource-limited settings.
