Baguma Andrew

I am a Lecturer of Immunology & Microbiology at Kabale University, School of Medicine. I obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Biomedical Laboratory Technology at Makerere University (Kampala- Uganda) and a Master’s Degree in Medical Microbiology at Kampala International University in Uganda. On completion of my undergraduate training in 2007, I was immediately recruited as Senior Laboratory Technologist at Kabale Regional Referral Hospital – Ministry of Health, where I worked until 2012, before Joining Regional Performance and Monitoring Team (RPMT) as a south Western Uganda Regional Malaria coordinator under Global fund in the Ministry of Health Uganda in 2013. In 2014, I obtained a 4-year German Academic Exchange (DAAD) Scholarship for my Doctoral studies at Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST). While at MUST, I was among the members that pioneered Genomics and Translational Laboratory under Dr Joel Bazira. I did part time teaching at Kampala International University(KIU) and Kabale Institute of Health Sciences (KIHS). In 2016, I was recruited as Laboratory Systems Advisor by Infectious Diseases Institute(IDI), Makerere University College of Health Science where I was tasked to initiate and operationalize Microbiology laboratory and Ebola isolation/Mobile Laboratory at Fort Portal Regional Referral Hospital under Makerere University Walter Reed(MUWRP) and Joint Mobile Emerging Disease Intervention Clinical Capability (JMEDCC) project. In 2018, I was recruited for two-year contract by the African Medical and Research Foundation (AMREF) to pioneer and operationalise Bacteriology laboratory in Juba, South Sudan. In April 2020, i was recruited by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a Laboratory consultant in the COVID 19 rapid response of South Sudan, where i was tasked to establish molecular testing laboratories and provide technical support to the South Sudan's Laboratory systems. I have vast experience in Laboratory Medicine, Molecular Microbiology and Medical Parasitology, with exposure to various state-of-the-art research laboratories across borders. My research interests are Infection/Pathogen Biology, Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR), and Molecular Diagnostics. Currently, I am also engagements as a National trainer and auditor in Biosafety and biosecurity, Laboratory quality management(LQMS).
