Career Trajectory
Bio
I'm in my third decade of teaching and, having taught professionally from kindy to tertiary ages, I'm fascinated by how we learn and, in particular, the hidden barriers to learning that all of us face at some stage in our lives. The challenge of digital teaching in the physical science, both in normal circumstances and in the exceptional times we've experienced recently, both excites me and terrifies me. As a middle aged teacher I'm trying to collect evidence and form hypothesises about that way that young minds study and learn, but there are so many more variables compared to the traditional teaching and learning model when textbooks were a thing. So one of my great interests is in using technology to maximise our connection with students, monitoring their engagement (whatever that looks like) and being smarter in the way that we deliver and scaffold learning. Whilst my principle subject area is undergraduate physics, I am acutely aware that numeracy, literary, emotional and pyschosocial preparedness and aptitudes all play a role in success in university studies and want to work with others to investigate these powerful but often discrete building-blocks of thinking and studying so that we can tailor our content and teaching methods to meet individual needs in a sustainable and satisfactory way.
My side interests are in the role of cosmic radiation events in the evolution of life on Earth (and in space, in the future) and also in the use of technology to mine data sources for signals of earthquake precursors. I'm currently involved in the development of the Space Research and Users group in Wellington and am interested in building collaborations with others to work on GPS TEC modelling of the ionosphere and remote sensing of surface temperatures to search for signals of impending large-scale seismic events.
