Bio
A/Professor Andrew Kneebone is a senior staff specialist in radiation oncology at the Royal North Shore and Gosford Hospitals as well as Genesis Cancer Care. He has more than 20 years of experience as a leading genito-urinary and gastro-intestinal cancer specialist and in 2018 was the chair of both the national Radiation Oncology Genitourinary executive (FROGG) as well as the chair of the Radiation Oncology Executive for the Australian Gastro-Intestinal Trials Group (AGITG). He has been an author on multiple published national guidelines including the areas of definitive and post prostatectomy radiotherapy, bladder, anal and pancreas cancer.
A/Prof Kneebone’s has a strong interest in research and has been a Chief investigator in trials attracting nearly $8 million from 12 competitive grants from the NHMRC, Cancer Australia, HRC of New Zealand and State Cancer Councils. He is currently the co-chair and CIA for a NHMRC supported multi-centre and multi-national randomised trial evaluating the optimal timing for post prostatectomy radiotherapy called the RAVES trial. The results of this much anticipated trial will be presented at a major international meeting in 2019. This has led to taking a leading role in an important international collaboration between the UK, Canada and France on post prostatectomy radiotherapy involving nearly 4000 patients which plans to be published in late 2019. In 2018 he was CIA for another NHMRC grant for more than $1.5 million dollars exploring the role of stereotactic body radiotherapy combined with chemotherapy for localised pancreas cancer which will be a multicenter randomised trial conducted as an AGITG study. A/Prof Kneebone takes a special interest in advanced radiotherapy techniques and is an author on more than 110 peer reviewed publications many of which focus on innovative radiotherapy techniques and providing optimal cancer care to patients.
A/Prof Kneebone is on numerous state and national committees related to the management of genito-urinary and gastro-intestinal cancers including several NHMRC advisory committees. He has been on the organising committee for 33 conferences and the Convener for 13 of these. A/Prof. Kneebone, was for six years, the Secretary of the NSW Genitourinary Oncology Group and between 2007 and 2011 was the co-chair of the NSW Cancer Institute EVIQ radiotherapy protocols committee. Since 2017 he has been on the National Board of the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia. Because of this standing, he has been invited speaker at more than 90 conferences or meetings.
A/Prof. Kneebone remains a committed teacher to medical students and junior doctors. He is attached to and lectures at the University of Sydney and has been a Director of Registrar Training in Radiation Oncology for more than 17 years. In 2014 he was awarded the Denise Lonergan award by the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists (RANZCR) for “outstanding level of commitment, participation and leadership in the area of training and education in radiation oncology over an extended period of time”.
