Bio
His research is focused on infectious diseases (pathogenesis, vaccines, therapeutics) using nonhuman primate models of human disease, several of which Dr. Lackner has helped develop. The majority of Dr. Lackner’s more than 200 publications have focused on the development and application of the nonhuman primate model of AIDS. His research on AIDS has examined host and viral determinants of disease emphasizing the in vivo effects of SIV/HIV on the central nervous system (neuroAIDS) and the mucosal immune system. Dr. Lackner’s work played a major role in establishing the macaque model of neuroAIDS and provided fundamental insight into the timing of neuroinvasion and the key cellular targets of SIV/HIV infection in the brain. Dr. Lackner’s work on the mucosal immune system led to a paradigm shift in the understanding of AIDS pathogenesis and the focus of vaccine development. Specifically, Dr. Lackner and colleagues demonstrated that the mucosal immune system is the primary target of SIV/HIV infection rather than the blood or peripheral lymphoid organs.
Dr. Lackner maintains an active research program and has been continuously funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) since 1988 and is currently principal investigator of several NIH grants. He also serves on the editorial boards of several academic journals, and on the external advisory boards to several academic institutions and scientific consortia.
